Sportsmanship Expectations

Poquoson High School Sportsmanship

“Sportsmanship is the philosophy of conduct and mental attitude in which ideals, ethical behavior and integrity infiltrate personal actions during competition with other schools or working with other individuals or groups.  Sportsmanship is a value which must be fostered through the coordinated efforts of school and athletic leaders, students and community residents.”   VHSL Sportsmanship Resource Guide

For all sports, taunting, “trash-talking”, and intimidating behavior can be cause for a player, coach, or spectator to be removed from a contest.  VHSL Sportsmanship Guide

Athletes should strive to always:

  1. compete with integrity, perseverance,  and a sense of fair play
  2. treat teammates, opponents, coaches, officials and spectators with respect
  3. exercise self-control in accepting officials’ decisions
  4. shake hands with opponents before and after each contest
  5. serve as positive role models to other students
  6. Accept both victory and defeat with pride and compassion, never with being boastful or bitter

Parent/student spectators, should strive to always:

  1. demonstrate respect for all players, opponents, coaches and officials
  2. give positive support and encouragement to all student athletes and performing groups
  3. recognize outstanding performances by either team with applause
  4. refrain from entering or throwing objects into the playing area
  5. refrain from taunting or singling out players

Always keep in mind that you are representing Poquoson High School and Poquoson as a community, so always stay positive.

"In the end, it’s extra effort that separates a winner from second place. But winning takes a lot more than that, too. It starts with complete command of the fundamentals. Then it takes desire, determination, discipline, and self-sacrifice. And finally, it takes a great deal of love, fairness and respect for your fellow man. Put all these together, and even if you don’t win, how can you lose?"
